The Wound
Four times this house has reached the final field. Four times it has lost. That was the 1970s, and it has not been back since.
Everything after has been a catalogue of specific, memorable disasters — a missed kick, a dropped pass, a fifteen-yard penalty at the exact wrong moment — each one distinctive enough that the bannermen can list them in order. Minnesota does not lose vaguely. It loses in ways that get names.
The Rented Lord
Two years ago this house spent a first-round pick on J.J. McCarthy and told everyone he was the future. That is the arrangement: you take a young man tenth overall, you absorb the mistakes, and in exchange you get the years on the other side of them.
Minnesota has decided it does not want to wait.
This spring, the day after Arizona released him, they signed Kyler Murray to a one-year deal. Not an extension. Not a succession plan. Twelve months, explicitly temporary, and the young man they drafted watches from the bench in his own building while a rented lord holds his seat.
There is no version of this that ends quietly. If Murray is good, this house has spent a first-round pick to produce a spectator. If Murray is not good, they benched their own heir to find that out. And either way the lease expires in January and the whole argument begins again, in public, with everyone in the room having watched the first one.
The Lord
Kyler Murray, for one year, on his second house, after being released by the one that built a decade around him.
The Knights
- Jauan Jennings — eight million, a modest addition to a modest spring.
Ancient Grudges
- House Packers. The one that matters, conducted in weather designed to punish everyone involved.
- House Bears, House Lions. Divisional and cold.
What Changed This Spring
Murray for one year, Jennings added, Jonathan Greenard lost to Philadelphia. A house that went 9–8 and responded by replacing its young lord with a rental. Everything about this season is temporary by design.
Prophecy
That the rental works, and that nobody has to discuss the bench.
