The Wound

This house has never played in a Super Bowl. It is one of a very small number that can say so, and it has been failing for longer than almost anyone — a single playoff win between 1958 and 2024, an entire winless season in 2008.

Then, recently, it became genuinely excellent, and the realm fell in love with it, and it still has not reached the final field. Detroit’s wound used to be humiliation. Now it is something sharper: getting close enough to believe.

Last year: 9–8, and out.

The Lord

Jared Goff. Discarded by Los Angeles in a trade about a more famous man, and rebuilt here into something better than he ever was there. He is proof that this house’s whole theory — that unwanted people can be made good — is sound.

The Knights

  • Jack Campbell — on the Watch, extended at eighty-one million, fifty-one and a half guaranteed.
  • Isiah Pacheco — arrived from Kansas City for almost nothing, after this house sent David Montgomery to Houston.

Ancient Grudges

  • House Packers, House Bears, House Vikings. Detroit spent decades as the division’s designated victim and has only recently stopped being that.

What Changed This Spring

Campbell extended, Pacheco in, Montgomery out. Quiet work. The realm has Detroit as the best bounce-back candidate in the sport and gives them the easiest schedule of anyone.

Prophecy

The final field. They have never been. It is the only thing left.
