The Wound

In 1972 this house went an entire season without losing a single game. It has never been done since. Miami mentions it every year, and every year it lands slightly worse, because the boast has quietly become the whole estate — a house that keeps a trophy from before most of its bannermen were born and has not won a postseason game since the year 2000.

The Dismantling

Last season this house lost its lord, its finest knight, and then let a third man go for good measure. None of it was a plan. All of it happened anyway.

Tua Tagovailoa took his third diagnosed concussion in Week 2, against Buffalo, in front of everyone. It was not a football injury by then — it was a medical argument conducted in public, with a portion of the realm openly asking whether he should be permitted to continue at all. This spring Miami let him go. He signed in Atlanta for the league minimum, which tells you what the rest of the realm concluded.

Tyreek Hill — for three years the fastest and most frightening man in the sport — dislocated his knee in Week 4 and tore multiple ligaments in it. Miami released him. The release saved twenty-two million and cost twenty-eight in dead money, which is the rare transaction that makes a house poorer in every direction at once. He has since had a second operation. He remains unsigned. His best remaining hope is that some house needs a ghost in December.

And Jaylen Waddle, the last one standing, was traded to Denver.

Lord, knight, and knight. In one spring. The house that was built entirely on being faster than everyone else sold the speed and kept the debt.

Malik Willis, who arrived on sixty-seven and a half million dollars, fully guaranteed.

That number is not a compliment. That is a house so tired of the question that it paid whatever the answer cost. He has been in the league since 2022 and started a handful of games. Miami has bet the estate on a man the rest of the realm had stopped watching.

Everything, and none of it upward. Out: Tagovailoa, Hill, Waddle. In: Willis, on the largest guarantee this house has ever handed anyone. The realm ranks Miami thirty-first of thirty-two and considers them the most likely house in the sport to win three games or fewer.

Prophecy

That 1972 stops being the only thing anyone says about them. Not this year.
