The Wound

Two things happened to this house that it has never resolved.

It left Baltimore in the middle of the night in 1984 — moving vans, snow, a city waking up to nothing. And it spent the 2000s with one of the greatest lords the sport has produced and converted all of it into a single title, which the realm still considers a waste.

Since then: a decade of searching. This house has started a new quarterback almost every year since 2019 and has treated each one as the answer.

The Lord

Daniel Jones, eighty-eight million dollars, sixty guaranteed.

Written off in New York, he arrived here and was, briefly and genuinely, excellent — before an Achilles tore and ended it. This house paid him anyway. It is the most sincere bet in the realm: that the good version was real and the injury was just an injury.

The Knights

  • Alec Pierce — a hundred and fourteen million to stay, after this house sent Michael Pittman to Pittsburgh. A clear statement about who they think is better.

Ancient Grudges

  • House Patriots. The defining rivalry of the last era, and Indianapolis lost most of it.
  • House Texans, House Titans, House Jaguars. The division, such as it is.

What Changed This Spring

They paid Jones, paid Pierce, and let Pittman go. Everything this house did was a bet that last year’s brief, interrupted good stretch was the truth.

Prophecy

That the Achilles was the only thing wrong.
