The Wound

The wound arrived in December 2025, and the realm still cannot process it.

For a decade this house was the fixed point. Five conference titles, three thrones, a lord who did things nobody had done. Then last season it went 6–11 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2014 — a collapse so total it broke the sport’s assumptions. One and nine in one-score games. Six straight losses to end it.

And on the 14th of December, in a 16–13 defeat to the Chargers that formally ended their season, Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL.

The king went down in a game that no longer mattered, at the end of a year that had already gone. There is no dignity in that and everyone knows it.

The Lord

Patrick Mahomes, thirty, returning from a torn knee.

He was not himself even before it. His completion rate was the worst of his career as a starter; his twenty-two touchdowns the fewest. The realm ranks this house eighth for the coming year — top ten, after eleven losses — because the realm cannot bring itself to believe what it watched.

That gap, between what happened and what people will accept, is the most interesting thing in the realm this season.

The Knights

• Kenneth Walker III — the Super Bowl MVP, taken from Seattle this spring on the largest free-agent contract in the history of the sport. This house responded to collapse by buying the best available man from the champion.
• Travis Kelce — still here, still paid, at the end of a long story.
• Justin Fields — the Understudy, acquired from New York, and insurance against a knee.

Ancient Grudges

• House Bills. Buffalo has run at this house in January for years and been turned away every time. Kansas City has been the wall.
• House Broncos, House Raiders, House Chargers. The division Kansas City simply owned, until last year, when it didn’t.

What Changed This Spring

They bought Walker from the champions, traded for Fields, and paid Kelce to stay. A house that lost eleven games spent the offseason acting like one that lost none — which is either denial or the correct read on a season that was really just one knee.

Prophecy

The Kingdom Endures. They have not changed the words. They were not going to.
