The Wound
For two decades this house simply had it. Six titles. An empire complete
enough that the rest of the realm organized itself around resenting them, and
they enjoyed that part too.
Then the great lord left for the sun, the grey steward left for nothing at
all, and House Patriots learned what the other thirty-one houses had always
known: that most seasons end badly, that this is ordinary, and that no one
was going to be kind to them about it.
The wound isn’t losing. It’s that they remember being untouchable, everyone
else remembers it too, and neither side can put it down.
The Lord
Drake Maye. Young, gifted, composed, and carrying a region’s memory of
perfection on a back that hasn’t earned any of it yet.
In February 2026 he took this house to the final field and lost it. He is
going to be great. Whether he is great in time is the only question anyone
in New England is actually asking, and they are not asking it kindly.
The Knights
- A.J. Brown — the most expensive promise this house has made in years,
bought to give the young lord someone to grow old with.
Ancient Grudges
- House Seahawks. A goal-line interception in February 2015 handed this
house a title. A Super Bowl loss in February 2026 took one back. The
account will not close.
- House Jets. The oldest, pettiest, loudest grudge in the realm, and the
one New England enjoys most — because it costs them nothing. A steward
walked out of this house and into that one in 1997 and the shouting has
genuinely never stopped. There was an espionage scandal. There were years
of a Jets steward promising the throne in public, at volume, and not
delivering it. New England has spent most of the intervening decades
winning, which is the cruelest possible response and entirely deliberate.
A lesser house may not be a threat and still be an enemy.
- House Giants. Twice this house was perfect. Twice House Giants was
standing there at the end of it.
What Changed This Spring
They spent the entire offseason arming the young lord. A.J. Brown by
trade. Romeo Doubs for seventy million. Dre’Mont Jones and
Kevin Byard to the Watch. Only Garrett Bradbury left, to Chicago.
Every dollar of it was addressed to a single question: that this house lost
the last war because its lord had no one to throw to. Brown lasted two hours
into the season before an ankle took him out of it.
Prophecy
That the young lord is the answer. Said every August, with feeling.
