The Wound
This is the oldest continuously operating house in the sport. It began in Chicago in 1898. It has one championship, from 1947, won in a city it left in 1960 for another city it left in 1988.
A hundred and twenty-eight years. One title. It is the longest sustained disappointment in American sport and the realm barely registers it, which is somehow the worst part.
Four O’Clock
At precisely four in the afternoon, Eastern time — the exact minute the new league year opened, not a minute into it — this house released Kyler Murray.
The timing was not an accident. Nothing about it was. Murray was the first overall pick in 2019 and the entire estate was rebuilt around him for seven seasons: the offense, the marketing, the future. Then it wasn’t working, and both sides knew it wasn’t working, and the parting was arranged so precisely that it happened on the first tick of the clock that permitted it.
He wanted it this way. That detail is the one that stings. A trade would have sent him wherever the houses agreed; a release let him choose. He signed in Minnesota the following day.
And Arizona is still paying him. Roughly fifty-five million in dead money, spread across two years by designation — about forty-seven and a half this season, the balance next. This house will spend more on a man playing in Minnesota than most houses spend on anyone.
Seven years, one plan, and it ends with a scheduled announcement and a bill that arrives for two more winters.
The steward went too. Jonathan Gannon left having won fifteen games and lost thirty-six across his time here, and Mike Lafleur — who ran the offence in Los Angeles for the house currently favoured to win everything — has the job now. New steward, no lord, and fifty-five million a year of nothing on the books. That is the position from which Arizona begins.
The Lord
Jacoby Brissett, thirty-three, who has spent his career being the competent man a house turns to when the plan has failed. The plan has failed.
The Knights
- Tyler Allgeier — arrived this spring. That is the extent of the news.
Ancient Grudges
- House Rams, House 49ers, House Seahawks. Arizona is the fourth house in the strongest division in the sport and has been for some time.
What Changed This Spring
They released Kyler Murray at four o’clock and signed Brissett and Allgeier. That first move is the whole offseason and most of the decade.
Prophecy
None worth writing. The realm ranks them thirty-second of thirty-two.
