The Wound

This house is young — it did not exist until 2002 — and its wound is correspondingly modern: it has never reached a conference championship. Not once. Two divisional-round exits in a row, the most recent a 28–16 defeat in New England, is the ceiling as currently constructed.

There is no ancient grief here. Just a house that keeps arriving at the same door and finding it locked.

The Lord

C.J. Stroud. Composed beyond his years since the day he arrived, and now past the stage where composure is remarkable on its own. This is the season he is asked to be more than promising.

The Knights

  • Will Anderson Jr. — on the Watch, extended for a hundred and fifty million, which makes him the cornerstone of everything this house intends.
  • David Montgomery — bought from Detroit to make the offense heavier.

Ancient Grudges

  • House Colts. The nearest thing Houston has to real history, and it is complicated: this city already lost one team, and it went to Tennessee.
  • House Titans. That team. Houston watched them leave in 1996.

What Changed This Spring

Anderson extended, Danielle Hunter and Ed Ingram added, Montgomery traded for, Tytus Howard sent to Cleveland. A house spending heavily on being difficult to play against.

Prophecy

A conference championship. It is genuinely the only thing left on the list.
