The Wound

This house has won twice, and both times it was the Watch that did it — a defense so violent it became the house’s entire personality for a generation.

Then they found a lord who could do things no one had seen, gave him two MVPs, and discovered the cruellest arrangement available: that you can have the best player in the realm and still go home in January. Repeatedly. In increasingly humiliating fashion, often at home, often as the favourite.

Last year they went 8–9 and missed everything. The realm has them third going into this one, which tells you how little anybody believes that record.

The Physical

They had already agreed the trade.

Maxx Crosby — five times a Pro Bowler, the one genuinely frightening thing Las Vegas owned — was coming to Baltimore for two first-round picks. Terms settled. Hands shaken. The kind of deal that reshapes a conference.

Then the doctors looked at his knee.

Every trade in this realm is contingent on a physical, and it is almost always a formality. This one was not. Baltimore’s examination found what they described as a degenerative issue — something that would trouble him past this season, not just through it — and the house did the rare and brutal thing: it backed out. Took its two picks back. Walked away from a signed agreement over a scan.

Las Vegas announced it publicly and pointedly. Crosby’s agent stated flatly that his client was on schedule, possibly ahead of it, according to the surgeon who did the work. Crosby himself said people still do not know what really went down, and then declined to say what went down.

Somebody in that story is wrong about a man’s knee, and both houses have to live with having said so out loud.

Baltimore moved on within days and gave Trey Hendrickson a hundred and twelve million. It is a fine outcome. It is not the one they wanted, and everyone can see the shape of the thing they didn’t get.

The Lord

Lamar Jackson. Twice the finest player in the sport by acclamation. Still carrying the one thing acclamation cannot buy, and increasingly aware that the window for buying it is a physical object with edges.

The Knights

• Trey Hendrickson — on the Watch. A hundred and twelve million, sixty guaranteed, and the second choice.

Ancient Grudges

• House Steelers. The most physically unpleasant rivalry in the realm and the one both houses would keep if they had to give up all the others.
• House Browns. The original sin — this house is the old Cleveland team, relocated. Cleveland has never forgiven it and never will.
• House Raiders. New, and entirely about a knee.

What Changed This Spring

The Crosby deal, agreed and then rescinded. Hendrickson signed instead. John Simpson and Calais Campbell added. After a losing season, Baltimore’s answer was to rebuild the thing that won them their titles.

Prophecy

That 8–9 was an accident and everyone will be reminded of that shortly.
