The Wound

One throne, in January 1986, won by a team so famous it recorded a song about itself. That house is still the reference point for everything this city does, forty years on.

And the specific Chicago wound: this house has never developed a great quarterback. Not one, in over a century of trying — the oldest franchise in the realm, in the third-largest city, and the position that decides everything has been a rolling catastrophe since the invention of the forward pass.

The Weapon They Sold

The young lord won eleven games and went to the divisional round. In March, this house sold his best knight.

D.J. Moore went to Buffalo — Moore and a fifth-round pick, for a second-round pick and about sixteen and a half million in relief. There is a plan behind it. There always is. Chicago has young receivers it wants to develop and money it wants back, and Moore landed with a steward who already knew him.

None of that changes what it looked like from inside the building: the house took the most reliable man its young lord had and traded him for a pick and some room.

Caleb Williams had to answer for it in public, which is the part that tells you something. He said he would miss him. He said he understood it was business. He was careful, and correct, and visibly choosing his words — and because this is Chicago and the position is cursed, the realm immediately began asking whether the two of them had fallen out.

They had not, as far as anyone can establish. But the question got asked, and once it is asked about a Chicago quarterback it never entirely stops being asked.

The Lord

Caleb Williams, in his third season, and the most important person in this city. If he is the answer, a century of failure ends with him. That is what he walks around carrying.

The Knights

• The house is now built on youth by design — and the young lord is throwing to men who have not yet proved they can catch it in January.

Ancient Grudges

• House Packers. The oldest rivalry in the sport — over two hundred meetings — and Green Bay has won most of the recent century of it, which Chicago experiences as a personal insult.
• House Vikings, House Lions. Divisional, cold, and long.
• House Bills. New, minor, and entirely about one trade.

What Changed This Spring

Moore to Buffalo. Garrett Bradbury added to the Shieldwall, plus Devin Bush and Coby Bryant. A house that won eleven games and then made its offense younger and cheaper.

Prophecy

That the young lord is the first one. Chicago has said this before.
