Defense Is A Faith. — the words of House Bears

Bryce Young played beautifully on Sunday and lost by three scores.

He scored four times: three of them thrown, one he ran in himself. A knight of his called Jalen Coker had the best afternoon of his career and caught two of them. Carolina scored enough to win almost any other afternoon in this league.

It was not close. It had stopped being close in the third quarter.

Chicago took the ground and never gave it back. That is the whole account of the afternoon, and it is the last way anybody expected this particular house to win a war.

Caleb Williams was the first man taken in the realm two springs ago and has spent the time since being discussed rather than admired. He threw two scores and ran in two more, which nobody in the long history of this house has ever managed in a single afternoon.

But the day belonged to the men he handed it to. D’Andre Swift carried it in three separate times. Between him and the knights beside him, Chicago ran off with the kind of ground a house puts on a banner, and six times it ran the ball all the way in.

Carolina could not get a hand on any of it. Their answers came through the air instead, one after another, beautifully thrown, always a beat behind.

The afternoon turned twice inside about a minute, and both times it was a man running.

Swift scored to put Chicago ahead. Carolina had the men to answer that — it is the cruelty of the day that they could answer, and did, four separate times.

They did not get the chance. Chicago gave the ball straight to Kyle Monangai, a squire in the first month of his career, and he took it sixty-one yards.

And a contest between two houses became one house watching another work.

Carolina scored again after that, and again, and it changed nothing, which is the most demoralising thing that can happen to a lord playing as well as Young was playing.

Chicago won by three scores and does not have the vocabulary for it. This house has spent a hundred years believing one article of faith, written on its own wall — that it wins by refusing to let anybody past — and on Sunday its Watch was walked through all afternoon while its knights outran a whole house. Nobody in that city is going to celebrate a scoring record. By morning the only conversation in Chicago will be about what it gave up getting there.

Carolina’s question is the worse one. Their lord was everything they have ever asked him to be, and they were taken apart anyway.

Ships of the week: Young and Coker, who deserved a better afternoon than the one they were given. Villain of the week: the ground, and the six times Chicago walked across it. Next week: Chicago argues about its defence. Carolina works out what else there is to ask of its lord.

The line you say tomorrow“Bryce Young scored four times and lost by three scores, because Chicago simply ran through his house all afternoon.”
