One Throw For Everything

House Lions · House Saints · A court intrigue — The bargain

We Were Never Supposed To Win. — the words of House Saints

Tyler Shough lost this game for New Orleans, spent the rest of the afternoon winning it back for them, and was then handed one throw for all of it.

He is the lord of a house the realm expects nothing from — New Orleans won six games last year — and he began by giving Detroit the ball three times. Two of those came one directly after the other, in the third quarter, and Detroit made a lead of three scores out of them. At Ford Field, against a house everybody has decided is on its way up, with Detroit’s own people settling in to enjoy the rest of it, that is where this story usually stops.

Then Shough stopped being that man.

He brought them back in increments. March after march — the slow kind of recovery that takes long enough for a crowd to work out what is being done to them and go quiet about it.

From the moment the gap reached three scores, New Orleans scored twenty-four points and Detroit scored three.

With a minute left in ordinary time Shough found Juwan Johnson at the far end of the field, and it was level, and a game that had been finished for an hour was not finished.

Extra time. Detroit went first, marched most of the field, and scored, which ought to have been the end of it.

New Orleans went next and scored too — and stood there a single point behind, with a minute and a half still on the clock.

Kellen Moore runs New Orleans, and what he did next is the only thing anyone will ask him about for the rest of the season.

The one point was a formality. The Reckoner walks out, it goes over, the afternoon is level again — and Detroit gets the ball back with a minute and a half to win it.

Moore did not want Detroit to have the ball again. So he left his men out there and asked for two: the win, where he stood. Which meant asking Shough for one more throw, and making that throw the whole game.

Shough threw it.

It did not arrive.

Detroit won by a point. Had the throw landed it would have been the worst collapse in that house’s history, and the two men who kept it from being one — Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs, both excellent for three hours — will not be mentioned again by anybody.

Moore was asked afterward why he had not simply taken the point and the tie. He said there was still a minute and a half to play, and he did not want to let Detroit back on the field with a chance to beat him. It is a defensible answer, honestly given.

It is also the sentence he will have read back to him every time this comes up again, for as long as he runs this house.

Ships of the week: Shough and Johnson, in the last minute of ordinary time, when everything was still possible. Villain of the week: the minute and a half Moore was afraid of — and he was right to be afraid of it. Next week: Detroit calls it a win and means it. New Orleans knows exactly what it nearly did.

The Record

  • Lions 31, Saints 30, in overtime — Ford Field
  • Halftime was 7-0 Detroit. Detroit led 21-0 with under nine minutes left in the third, after forcing back-to-back turnovers — a Jahmyr Gibbs score and a touchdown catch by Amon-Ra St. Brown
  • Tyler Shough early: two interceptions and a fumble lost on a sack
  • From 21-0, New Orleans outscored Detroit 24-3 for the rest of regulation — 17 unanswered on three straight drives, then the tying score
  • Shough to Juwan Johnson tied it with 1:07 to play in regulation
  • Detroit went first in overtime: 10 plays, 70 yards, a touchdown, for 31-24
  • New Orleans answered. With 1:34 left in overtime, Kellen Moore went for two and the win rather than the extra point and a tie
  • Shough's two-point throw fell incomplete
  • Moore afterward: "If we kick the extra point and tie the game, there is still 1:34 to play. I didn't want to let them back on the field with a chance to make a play and beat us."
  • Jared Goff: 26 of 39, 206 yards, two touchdowns
  • Jahmyr Gibbs: 186 total yards, two touchdowns
The line you say tomorrow“New Orleans erased three scores in Detroit, then went for the win instead of the tie, and lost by a single point.”
