Slow Burn

House Rams · House 49ers · A court intrigue — Slow burn

Five Rings And A Grudge. — the words of House 49ers

House Rams landed in Australia about a day before they had to play.

That was on purpose. Stay on California time, arrive, fight, leave — it had worked in London last autumn, and Sean McVay is a clever man. San Francisco had been walking around Melbourne in the sun for a week.

You already know how this ends. It is the oldest lesson at court and Los Angeles paid full price for it.

In February this realm weighed every lord it had and named Matthew Stafford the finest of them. On Friday morning, at the bottom of the world, he could not make anything happen at all.

He is thirty-eight and he did not hide from it afterward. They never found a rhythm, he said. Two good marches in the entire day. It felt like they were fighting themselves.

And the man Los Angeles bought its future for was invisible. Myles Garrett is the most destructive person in the sport; this house gave up a young defender of its own and three years of its drafts to get him, so that nobody would walk down a field on them again. He touched no one. A knee took his summer and he will not say which one. Afterward he said the worst sentence a bought man can say — that out there he had been thinking about himself, and not about them.

Then, out of the half, Los Angeles finally marched the length of the field and arrived one stride from scoring.

One stride, and one attempt left. Fail and you get nothing for the whole journey.

McVay had a choice. He could hand it to a knight whose entire purpose is carrying the ball forward — or he could send the thirty-eight-year-old lord himself, head down, into the largest men on the field.

He sent Stafford. Fred Warner was waiting for him, playing his first game back on an ankle that broke and turned the wrong way in October, and he stopped him where he stood. On the screens it looked as though Stafford had made it.

He had not.

San Francisco took the ball and carried it back the entire length of the field, unhurried, and Brock Purdy found Deebo Samuel standing alone at the far end of it with nobody within reach. That was the game. Twenty points of daylight, and the rest of the morning was arithmetic.

Late, Los Angeles took its lord off the field unhurt. A house does not spend an MVP on a morning already gone.

Afterward, someone told a San Francisco knight how briefly the other house had been in the country — one day, against his week. He did not gloat. He just said what everybody watching had worked out by the second quarter: Los Angeles probably should have flown out a few days earlier.

Ships of the week: Purdy and Samuel, who have been finding each other like that for years, and did it again at the bottom of the world. Villain of the week: Raheem Morris, who built the Watch in Los Angeles and now runs San Francisco’s, and knows where everything in that house is kept. Next week: Los Angeles goes home to explain itself.
