Twice We Slew The Perfect. — the words of House Giants
Baltimore kept John Harbaugh for eighteen years and then took the house away from him.
Eighteen years is most of a working life. He won them a throne along the way. They let him go anyway, last winter, two days after a January defeat that ended Baltimore’s season — which is how long loyalty lasts once the arithmetic stops working.
New York hired him. New York had run out of ideas and he had run out of a job, and both of them knew exactly what the other was for.
They gave him Dallas for his first night. A grudge as old as television, a Sunday evening, the whole realm watching and nothing else on.
He won it going away.
The man who won it for him is in his second season, on a house that won four games all of last year, which is the kind of sentence that normally ends with a young lord being ruined in public.
Jaxson Dart was very nearly perfect instead. He scored three times through the air, and not once in the whole evening did he hand Dallas anything back. Twice he found Isaiah Likely, the knight New York bought for forty million in the spring precisely so that would be possible. Eleven times he ran with the ball himself, which is not what a house with one valuable man is supposed to let him do — and he did it like a man who had decided the evening was going to be physical whether Dallas agreed or not.
It turned under a minute before the interval, with the houses level, in the most ordinary way there is.
Dak Prescott threw one he should not have thrown. Jevon Holland went to the ground sideways underneath it and came up with it in his hands, and New York scored before the break. New York led from that moment to the end of the night.
Then came the part Dallas will actually remember, and there was nothing thrilling about it at all.
Out of the interval, New York took the ball and kept it.
Twelve plays. Seventy-four yards. Eight full minutes off the clock and Likely at the end of it again — eight minutes in which Dallas stood on a sideline in front of a national audience with nothing to do but watch a house it does not respect take its time.
Prescott took the blame afterward, which he always does, and said he was angry about it, which he does not always say.
His steward was plainer. Brian Schottenheimer said his house had been poor, that this was not their standard, that it is a humbling business and they had just been humbled.
New York has not had an evening like that in years. It belonged, in the end, to the man Baltimore was finished with.
Ships of the week: Dart and Likely, twice, in front of everyone, exactly as intended. Villain of the week: Baltimore, watching the steward it dismissed win a Sunday night somewhere else. Next week: New York finds out whether that was the start of something or the best night of its year.
